Korean Drama ost Review—Beethoven Virus
Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
The Korean drama ost Beethoven Virus hasn’t managed the kind of popularity that other Korean drama ost have garnered mainly because it leans too much on classical music. This music is quite different to the tastes of the modern generation and people outside the local area may not find it to be too appealing.
But there’s an education waiting to happen here. For example, you might just discover that a tune you learnt to play when you were a kid was in fact one of the popular tunes that Beethoven composed. This could be quite interesting if you have a flair for music.
The main protagonist in this drama is Kang ma-ae. He plays the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in a highly interesting manner. He in fact brings an entire orchestra to play this tune. The tune pours out from the stage where it is played. Additionally, the role of Kim Myeon-min is also played with great fervor.
Actually, this is a common people’s tale, with characters such as a poor person who wishes to play the flute, a policeman who plays the trumpet and a woman who plays the cello. It is about how these music aficionados come together and their stories get interwoven. It is about how they shed their inhibitions to perform on stage.
The female protagonist Ru-mi is deaf. But she wants to stay in the orchestra and so she has to struggle with her limitation. This part of the story is quite heart-wrenching, just as her romance with Ma-ae is heart-warming. There is a brilliant contrast drawn in the characters of the conservative Ma-ae and the carefree Ru-mi. It seems quite fantastic that two such opposite characters could have a romantic interlude, and that’s part of the soul of the entire drama.
Then there’s Gun-woo. He has a soft corner for Ru-mi. He is a brilliant onstage conductor as well and is a treat to watch. You almost feel as though you are there, performing under his baton.
If you think that you will doze off watching this Korean drama ost which is about classical music, you are quite mistaken. There’s a lot happening on the show that will pique your interest and keep you hooked. You will soon be following the stories of all these strong characters and wanting to know what happens to them. And, of course, there are Beethoven and Mozart to keep you company.
Watch it—you will be watching a great show full of great music.
